  7. This document is of interest to those who use a modem for dial-up Internet access.  For an introduction to BackWeb and more general information, please refer to the ‘Read Me First’ document.

  12. BackWeb Support for PPP

  14. BackWeb currently supports two widely used PPP implementations: Open Transport PPP (1.0 and 1.0.1 confirmed) and FreePPP (2.5.v2, 2.5v3 and 2.6beta confirmed).  MacPPP is also supported (though obsolete), since FreePPP is based on it.

  16. Using one of the supported PPP implementations has some benefits:

  18. • Better utilization of the dial-up connection
  19. BackWeb will automatically start working as soon a connection is made.  (BackWeb cannot open a PPP dial-up connection on its own because it is a background-only application: most PPP software opens windows or dialogs to establish the connection, which a background-only application cannot do.)

  21. • Using the “Disconnect if Idle” feature
  22. Many PPP implementations support a feature to automatically close an idle connection, which is useful if you accidentally forget to close it yourself.  Since BackWeb operates by using your Internet connection when it is idle, the PPP connection would never close by itself.  BackWeb has a feature to circumvent this problem— please refer to the “Dial-up Settings” in the “Global Settings” dialog of the BackWeb Viewer application.

  25. BackWeb and Unsupported PPP Software

  27. BackWeb works with other PPP software, but you must keep the following in mind:

  29. • BackWeb does not detect connection
  30. With unsupported PPP software, BackWeb cannot detect when a connection is open or closed.  Because of this, it will not attempt to operate until it sees another application using the connection.  This means, for example, opening an Internet browser. BackWeb will use the connection as long as other applications are using it too. This means that if BackWeb is the only one left using the connection ( for example, when you close your web browser ), it will stop immidiatly.
